What you can safely do yourself

- Open the damper fully before lighting a fire and leave it open until the embers are completely out.
- Never block air supplies or vents. Starved combustion makes more CO, not less.
- Do a ground-level visual check of the vent pipes you can see indoors — rust, white staining, gaps at joints, or a sagging connector all justify a service call.
